Known as the nation's first vacation destination, the Northern Catskills offer some of the most breathtaking scenery to be found anywhere. Early in the 1800s, steamships began ferrying visitors up the mighty Hudson River to ports in Catskill and Kingston (the state's first capital). From there they endured a rugged stagecoach ride up the narrow, winding roads to the mountaintop and the grand hotels of the era.
